The Battle for Your Mind – Finding Comfort in the Holy Spirit
Have you ever found yourself praying over and over, asking for your pain to stop? Sometimes, the pain from your past or present feels overwhelming, and words fail you. You may only be able to cry or groan. In those moments, it feels as if comfort will never come, and your heart sinks deeper into devastation.
Here is my personal story: I was living in Iowa at the time this took place. That year started off rough—we were in our second year of the pandemic and saw whole families destroyed by COVID-19. In one instance, both elderly parents died, along with two of their sons. If that wasn’t enough, I was going through my own personal battles, and answers to my prayers would not come fast enough.
Then, the unimaginable happened in the ER where I worked. They brought in a toddler through the ER, who happened to be the daughter of one of our best nurses. I went to the little chapel we have in the hospital and prayed bitterly. I groaned, cried, and pleaded with the Lord, but the little girl was gone.
If you’ve felt this way, remember: you are in a war—spiritual and emotional.
In any war, there are casualties, but God has given us spiritual armor to stand firm. The enemy targets our minds and hearts, using our past pain to trap us in cycles of despair. But prayer is our lifeline. Even when God doesn’t answer immediately, He is always listening. Alongside prayer, knowing God’s Word is vital—it’s your sword in the battle.
There is good news: “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” (Romans 8:26). The Holy Spirit is your Comforter, interceding for you when you can’t find the words.
Romans 8:26-27
Ephesians 6:10-18
John 14:26
