A Re-Born Identity: Wisdom from Proverbs 22

Story:

Did you know that when we accept Christ into our lives, our desire should be to achieve a re-born identity in Him? Through the leading of the Holy Spirit, our lives change over time—not overnight, but gradually. Along with this internal transformation, we also face external challenges. Often, we find ourselves between a rock and a hard place, confused and burdened, especially when we must make decisions that test our beliefs.

We’re not alone in this struggle. Scripture tells us about Daniel and his friends, who declared, “But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” (Daniel 3:18). Their decision to follow God brought trials, just as ours often does. The world hasn’t changed much since Daniel’s day, and we will continue to face challenges and tribulations for choosing Christ. Jesus Himself said, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Choosing Christ is not popular in today’s society. Some think Christianity is weak, but I disagree. True Christianity, led by the Holy Spirit, is powerful and transformative. It may even cause discomfort in others—sometimes even among those who call themselves believers but haven’t experienced a true re-born identity. They may label you as “legalistic” for reflecting Christ’s character, but that is the cost of genuine transformation.

Let me ask you: Have you ever wondered how so many believers can be deceived into thinking they are living righteously? The answer is simple: Satan confuses some “believers” so they believe a lie. Some think that simply believing in Christ, without repentance, is enough. But even Satan knows and believes in Christ—does that mean he will be saved? Of course not. The idea of “once saved, always saved” is not found in the Bible. Living however you want and expecting to be saved is a dangerous mentality.

Wearing a “WWJD” bracelet or teaching Bible school while living a double life will not save anyone. We cannot straddle the fence; we must choose to reflect Christ or reflect the world. Coming to Christ means having a spirit of repentance, surrender, and a desire to keep God’s precepts. Without these, we become empty vessels, compromising our Christian walk.

The Bible warns, “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), proving what is acceptable to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:6-10)

A true re-born identity in Christ is an ongoing process, displayed by the fruit of the Spirit: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

Bible Verse:

“A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”
— Proverbs 22:1 (NIV)

Call to Action:

Reflect on your spiritual identity today. Are you living out a re-born identity in Christ, or just going through the motions? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you display the fruit of the Spirit in every area of your life. Choose daily to walk as a child of light.

Things To Remember:

  • Transformation in Christ is a process, not an instant change.

  • Trials and challenges are part of following Christ.

  • Outward actions mean nothing without a spirit of repentance and surrender.

  • The fruit of the Spirit is evidence of a true re-born identity.

  • Don’t be deceived by empty words or popular beliefs—let God’s Word guide you.
