Proverbs 19 Growing a Tree of Wisdom and Forgiveness:

Theme:

How the Holy Spirit nurtures true growth and forgiveness, using the wisdom of Proverbs 19 and the metaphor of a tree to illustrate our healing journey.

Story:
Picture your life as a tree. Each season, the Holy Spirit plants seeds-moments of trial, conviction, or even pain-so that you may grow. As these seedlings sprout, your tree begins to bear fruit: love, patience, forgiveness, and wisdom. But growth can be uncomfortable. Sometimes, as we heal, we discover things about ourselves we wish we hadn’t. True growth means facing these truths with humility and letting the Holy Spirit transform us from the inside out.

Proverbs 19 is rich with wisdom about character, patience, and the consequences of our choices. Verse 11 says, “A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.” This is the heart of forgiveness. I know firsthand how hard this is. From ages 5 to 14, I suffered abuse from 11 different people. The pain left me broken, angry, and even dangerous to myself. For years, I thought I could “fix” myself, but only when I surrendered to the Spirit’s work did true forgiveness-and healing-begin.

Forgiveness is never in our own strength. Many claim to forgive, but without the Holy Spirit, bitterness lingers. Real forgiveness is a fruit that only grows when the Spirit softens your heart.

Relevance Today:
Many survivors of trauma try to move forward, only to find themselves stuck in cycles of pain and resentment. Proverbs 19 reminds us that wisdom, patience, and forgiveness are supernatural fruits-gifts that come when we let the Spirit tend to the roots of our pain.

Bible Verses:

  • Proverbs 19:11 – “A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.”

  • Proverbs 19:21 – “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

  • Matthew 6:14-15 – On forgiveness and freedom

  • Galatians 5:22-23 – Fruit of the Spirit

Call to Action:

  • Print out or draw a tree. On each leaf, write a fruit of the Spirit or a character trait you want to grow.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any roots of bitterness or unforgiveness in your heart.

  • Pray for the power to forgive, even if your feelings aren’t ready to follow.

Things to Remember:

  • Growth is uncomfortable, but it’s where healing happens.

  • Forgiveness is not forgetting or excusing, but releasing yourself through the Spirit’s power.

  • The Holy Spirit is the only one who can soften your heart and help you bear lasting fruit.
