Proverbs 17 Treasures of the Heart – What Are You Holding Onto?
Theme
True treasure is not found in gold, jewels, or even memories, but in the heart’s character and what we value most. Proverbs 17 teaches that the greatest riches are found in wisdom, peace, and a pure heart-while misplaced treasures can lead to pain and emptiness.
Personal Story
There’s something captivating about pirate stories-treasure chests, adventure, and the hope of finding something precious. My dad, a lifelong collector, believes “one person’s trash is another’s treasure.” He’s found value in the oddest things, living by that old adage.
But not all treasures are good for us. Sometimes, as survivors, we place great value on things or people who don’t deserve our love, time, or energy. The abused woman clings to memories of fleeting happiness to survive the bad times. The man battling addiction treasures the memory of his first high, endlessly searching for that feeling again. Not all treasures are worth keeping.
Years ago, I was “well off”-a millionaire on paper, but poor in spirit. I was bitter, angry, and ruthless as an employer. I remember one employee leaving in tears after I said something cruel. Looking back, I see how my words flowed from a heart full of pain. As Jesus said, “from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” When I came to Christ, He changed my character. Now, I know that what truly matters isn’t wealth or status, but the treasures of the heart-kindness, humility, and love. The only thing I can take to heaven is my character.
Relevance Today
In a world obsessed with possessions and status, it’s easy to treasure the wrong things. Proverbs 17 reminds us that “a cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22). What we hold in our hearts-whether bitterness, memories, or love-shapes our lives and our healing journey.
