Focus: Surviving When Christians Hurt You Day 18 | September 18 When Brightness Becomes Bait Don’t Let Your Light Be Used
Just as spiders keep fireflies glowing as bait to attract more prey, some people may “keep you close” for the brightness you bring to a group, ministry, or their circle—not out of care, but simply because your spirit draws others in. You may notice leaders or friends who never set you free to minister or move, but want you present for their advantage. Jesus warned, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life.” (John 10:10) Don’t let anyone use your gifts or joy as bait; God calls you to authentic, free relationships, not exploitation.
Bible Verses:
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)
“Serve one another humbly in love.” (Galatians 5:13)
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others…” (1 Peter 4:10)
Call to Action:
Reflect on where you are celebrated versus simply “used.” Ask God for wisdom to step out of relationships, roles, or ministries that trap rather than free your light.
3 Things to Remember:
Some admire your glow but refuse to let you flourish.
God intends for your gifts to bring life, not be exploited.
True Christian community encourages you to shine freely.
