Proverbs 1 - Listening to Wisdom: Healing from Past Hurts (Proverbs 1)

Theme:

The vital role of listening to wisdom in the journey of healing from past hurts, rooted in the promises and exhortations of Proverbs 1.

Story:
Throughout life, we’re surrounded by promises-some kept, many broken. When trust is shattered, especially by those closest to us, pain lingers and shapes our choices. As someone who has struggled with betrayal and deep wounds, I once believed that healing was about fixing myself or finding the right people. But Proverbs 1 reveals a better way: healing begins with listening to wisdom, especially the wisdom that comes from God.

Proverbs 1 opens with a call: “for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight… let the wise listen and add to their learning” (Proverbs 1:2,5 NIV). Wisdom is not just for the “wise”-it’s for anyone willing to listen, especially those who have been hurt. The chapter warns us not to follow the path of those who entice us into bitterness, revenge, or destructive behaviors, but instead to heed the instruction of our “father” and “mother”-the voice of wisdom and experience (Proverbs 1:8-9).

Relevance Today:
When we’re hurting, it’s easy to tune out wise voices and let pain dictate our choices. But Proverbs 1 teaches that listening to wisdom is a shield against further harm and a guide toward wholeness. Wisdom calls out in the streets (Proverbs 1:20), offering guidance to anyone willing to hear. The text promises that “whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm” (Proverbs 1:33 NIV). In spiritual warfare, wisdom is both armor and compass.
