The Gospel of Peace – Walking in Purpose
Theme
The importance of being ready to share the Gospel of Peace as part of spiritual warfare.
Story: The Foot Protection described in Ephesians 6 reminds me of the Great Commission—to carry the Gospel message wherever we go. Just as soldiers need sturdy footwear to move swiftly in battle, we need spiritual readiness to share God’s peace with others.
About a year after my conversion, I was invited to revisit the church that previously had been praying for me for over two years. This church was pivotal in my spiritual journey, as it was where I eventually got baptized. On one of my visits, I briefly met a woman who looked strikingly like Jennifer Lopez, the actress and singer. She was absolutely gorgeous, but something but for some reason I wanted to avoid her. I didn’t know why, but at the same time, the Holy Spirit gave me a strong sense that I needed to speak with her.
During the morning service, I kept trying to avoid her because I was uncomfortable. I didn’t want to talk to her because I wasn’t sure what God wanted me to say. After church service, my spiritual mother—who had been instrumental in bringing me back to the church and whom God used to help me in my reborn experience—said she wanted me to meet one of her best friends. To my surprise, it was the very same woman I had been avoiding all morning.
My spiritual mother then told me she wouldn’t be able to take me to lunch at her house because she forgot about a church meeting she had to go to and asked if I could stay with her friend instead. At that moment, I began praying fervently: “Lord, what is it that You want me to tell this lady? I don’t want to hurt her in any way if it’s not Your leading.”
We went to her house for lunch and talked about many things, but the Holy Spirit kept insisting that I speak with her. Finally, after returning to church later that day, I prayed again for guidance. To my surprise, she somehow ended up behind me in the sanctuary. I turned around and said, “Gayle” (a name used here for anonymity), “the Holy Spirit wants me to speak with you about one thing only.”
I continued: “I was a victim of sexual abuse as a little girl, and I know the pain that one carries. But I also know that there is forgiveness. I don’t know if this pertains to you, but I was compelled to tell you.”
At that moment, Gayle broke down crying uncontrollably in the sanctuary. Embarrassed by her reaction, I said, “I’m so sorry.” She replied through tears: “No, there’s nothing to be sorry about. How did you know that I was a victim of childhood sexual abuse, I NEVER TOLD ANYONE?”
I responded honestly: “I don’t know.” She grabbed my hands and led me into a children’s room where we sat down together. Gayle shared her heartbreaking story: At the tender age of five, her father began molesting and raping her—a cycle of abuse that lasted until she was around eleven years old. Now as an adult, Gayle faced another challenge: Her elderly parents—including her father—had no place to stay because of her mother's declining health in Mexico, so she opened up her home for them.
Every night after everyone went to sleep, Gayle would lie outside her daughter’s doorway until early morning hours to ensure that this terrible monster now living in her home wouldn’t harm anyone again. Her pain and fear were palpable as she recounted this story.
Over the next year, we worked together on healing through prayer and support. It wasn’t an instant process—it took time—but Gayle eventually found peace through forgiveness and God’s grace.
